If you’ve spent any time living in the desert, you’ll come to appreciate the desert rains. Having lived in Arizona now for well over three decades, I look forward to the beautiful thunderstorms as well as the gentle rains that bring the desert to life.
Some of the most beautiful desert landscaping, in my opinion is found in communities that require “native plant” or “drought-resistant” landscaping. When it comes to desert plants for your yard, the variety available is truly amazing. One of my favorite places to visit to get ideas on updating my yard is the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix. From offering classes, to tips on what to plant and when to plant it, the Desert Botanical Gardens has it all…including the plants.
Here are some of my favorites. As far as desert trees are concerned, one of my favorites is the Ironwood. It is an evergreen tree with pale pink to lavender flowers in spring. As for wildflowers and flowering shrubs, I love the Desert Globemallow which comes in a variety of colors, as well as the Arizona Poppy and the Desert Bluebells.
When it comes to cactus, my favorites are the Nightblooming Cereus with its white and pale yellow night blooms and the strawberry hedgehog cactus with its bright pink flowers in spring. If you do a little research before you start your yard work, you’ll find a plethora of low-water use and drought-resistant plants that offer beautiful year-round color to make your backyard an oasis.
